Sinaloa artists work on the Steamroller Prints Project

During the celebrations of Día de Muertos, Mazatlán and San Francisco, California, will be united by the art of the Sinaloa Steamroller Prints Project, that began this weekend to create the first works that will be exhibited and will participate in the processions.

For the third year, the Sinaloa Steamroller Prints Project is invited to participate in the Day of the Dead Procession in San Francisco, California, considered one of the 100 most important multicultural events nationwide in the United States.

The Steamroller is a concept involving action art, urban art and public art. Its creator was Katherine Kidman, an American artist from San Antonio Texas. In Mazatlán, this concept is inspired by the tradition of José Guadalupe Posada, the great Mexican fine artist of the 19th Century, creator of "La Calavera Catrina".

In an interview on Saturday afternoon, the Delegate of the Southern Zone of the Sinaloa Instituto de Cultura, and coordinator of the project, shared that in this edition the Steamroller will have a greater reach, as it is a collaboration of the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan and the Instituto de Cultura de Sinaloa.

"It is a project that will continue to grow with collaborations of artists from Culiacán and Los Mochis. For this edition, the banners will be displayed in more places: five in the Callejonada of Día de los Muertos organized by the Instituto de Cultura de Mazatlan; four will go to Culiacán´s MASIN Death Hall and five banners will participate in the Day of The Dead in San Francisco, California, considered one of the 100 most important multicultural events nationwide in the United States.

One of the objectives of the project is to promote this technique that is not very present in the fine artists of Sinaloa. The Steamroller team is made up of 45 printers from Mazatlán, Culiacán and Los Mochis and their creative process is inspired by the exciting magical realism that Juan Rulfo handles in his work "El llano en llamas".

To achieve greater quality and synergy in the engravings, Manuel Carlock and Cecilia Sánchez Duarte recently visited Los Mochis and Culiacán and gave workshops to explain the dynamics of the engraving process and the logistics of handling the steamroller that prints them.

In the workshops, maestro Carlock taught his students the dynamics of the exquisite Cadaver: a game in which several people create a text from phrases, both old and new. When the members of the workshop mastered this technique, they applied it in the creation of the engravings in relation to the universe of the compilation of stories of Rulfo.

The dynamic of artistic creation is to select two different engravings so that they remain together in the banners.
The artists print on a fabric of 3.2 meters above a frame of two pieces of wood and then is sent to be sewn, to give shape to the banner.
